From his first Grand Champion ribbon in 1986 to his final festival appearance in 2011, Li’l Sebastian was Pawnee’s most celebrated resident. A miniature horse of ordinary size and extraordinary presence, he received 25 consecutive Grand Champion titles, an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame, and, upon his passing, the largest memorial service in city history.

His memorial paddock and eternal(ish) flame stand in Lafayette Park. May 14 is observed annually as Li’l Sebastian Remembrance Day under Ordinance 12-2012, when city flags fly at half mast and the memorial beacon burns at its full rated output.

The memorial flame awaits.
