Mayor Gergich's Name Misspelled on New City Hall Plaque; Replacement Ordered

Public Notice

Published June 28, 2026 · Office of the City Manager

PAWNEE, Ind. — The City of Pawnee has ordered a replacement for the dedication plaque installed last week in the renovated City Hall rotunda, after the plaque was found to identify Mayor Garry Gergich as 'Larry Gengurch.'

It is the fourth consecutive municipal plaque to misidentify the mayor, following earlier plaques reading 'Jerry Gergich,' 'Terry Gergich,' and 'Garry Girgite.' The vendor has apologized and attributed the error to 'a template issue that keeps happening somehow.'

Mayor Gergich, reached at the annual Gergich family cookout, said he 'honestly didn't notice' and described the plaque as 'beautiful either way.' The corrected plaque is expected in August. The city has retained the misprinted plaques, which are displayed together in a case on the third floor that has become an unofficial tourist attraction.
