PAWNEE, Ind. — The Pawnee City Council voted 4–0 Tuesday to approve Phase II of the Pawnee Commons master plan, authorizing construction of a performance lawn, an expanded all-abilities playground, and the planting of 40 native shade trees on the park's eastern edge.
Pawnee Commons, built on the site formerly known as Lot 48, opened in 2013 after a decade-long community campaign. Deputy Parks Director Leslie Knope, who led that campaign, attended Tuesday's vote and was described by witnesses as 'visibly vibrating.'
"This is what government is for," Knope said in a statement that continued for eleven additional pages, available from the Clerk's office. Parks Director Ron Swanson, asked for comment, said the project was 'fine' and that the meeting had run nine minutes over.
Construction begins this fall, with completion targeted before the 2027 Harvest Festival. Funding comes from the parks capital fund and a matching grant; no tax increase is required, a fact the Director asked to be printed in bold. No tax increase is required.
