PAWNEE, Ind. — The Interdepartmental Raccoon Task Force released its 2026 annual report Wednesday, describing the city's raccoon population as 'stable, organized, and aware of the report.'
Key findings include a 12% improvement in residential trash-lid compliance, a 30% reduction in break-ins at municipal concession stands following the installation of latches raccoons have not yet defeated, and the successful negotiated withdrawal of raccoons from the fourth floor of City Hall, which has been reclassified as a shared-use space.
The report reaffirms the city's long-standing coexistence framework. 'The raccoons are part of the fabric of our city,' the report states in its opening line, as it has every year since 1987.
Residents are reminded that raccoon incidents on public property may be documented using Form R-2, and that filing the form is, in the report's words, 'largely ceremonial, but the ceremony matters.'
